Why do cats abandon their kittens

Roads are a death trap for cats at night. The mother could be displaced after being trapped for spaying. There are programs for neutering stray cats where I live. Every cat has a different personality. I knew one cat who left her kittens when they were almost as large as she was, and she still visited regularly.

She was a very nurturing and motherly cat, not to mention an excellent model for video clips. Just like she was more nurturing than the average cat, some cats are less nurturing. They get pregnant twice a year or so and have four kittens in a litter each time on average.

And in a few years… do the math. But you should always use caution before touching a kitten, especially a feral kitten. Maybe its mother is one of the few cats who will abandon her kittens if you touch them. I have a passion about shooting videos of feral cats. Some don't. A disinterested mom may also have been traumatized during the birth if she was, for example, not in a safe place or had physical difficulty in labor. Her hyper-vigilance and nervousness might make it difficult for her to relax and lie down so the kittens can suckle. Motherhood can be a challenge for any species.

Give these cat moms compassion, consideration, and help if they need it, just as you would for any struggling mother. Call your local shelter, rescue group, or veterinarian for help, and remember: even though kittens are adorable, over 4 million animals are euthanized annually in the U.

You want to help, right? Before jumping to the rescue, consider these recommendations.

Stand far away and wait. A Mother cat will leave her kittens for hours at a time. She will NOT return if you are standing over her kittens. Remove the kittens only if they are in immediate danger. Quiet, warm, dry kittens are typically fed and cared for and mom cat is probably just out hunting. Noisy, cold, wet kittens may need to be rescued, but always assess the situation thoroughly.

If mom returns and the area is relatively safe, leave the kittens alone with mom until they are weaned. You can offer a shelter and regular food to mom, but keep the food and shelter at a distance from each other.
