One player from each team just opens the Google Slides file with one giving clues and the other following along to keep track of any taboo words said. The caveat: It's obviously much more time consuming to make your own game entirely. However, you can save some time and energy by using a list of Taboo cards available online. There's a free app for a Taboo-like game called eTabu that allows you to play online with strangers or with friends. However, the "friends" version requires you to pass your phone around like you would with Heads Up.
Essentially, the eTabu app is like giving all your friends their own deck of Taboo cards to play with so you don't have to worry about screen sharing or looking off the same document. The caveat : Your free game options are pretty limited. You get one free starter pack of words. Catchphrase is essentially Taboo without the taboo words. Either way, we promise you'll have a wonderful experience with any of our vetted hosts!
For international participants, we recommend selecting our default Taboo game. If players feel a word is too complicated, they have the option to "skip" and keep the game moving. If this is something you're concerned about, please let us know. Each game room can accommodate a maximum of 10 participants 2 teams of 5 players each. We've found that teams larger than 5 aren't able to collaborate as effectively since there are so many people in one Zoom room.
If you have multiple teams, all teams will play Taboo at the same time. The event itself can accommodate as many players as you'd like. Latecomers will have no problem accessing game links so long as their team doesn't go over the 5 person maximum per game link. They'll simply be brought to wherever the rest of their team is on their Taboo! So if they're late and their team has already started, they will miss whichever parts of the game their team has completed.
You can always give min of wiggle room for people to enter the main room of Zoom and have everyone do the 'icebreaker' found on your games sheet. Participants will be broken up into teams using breakout rooms, and will play in separate rooms for the entirety of their Taboo. We do not bring everyone back into the main room as teams will finish at different times.
If you'd like, you can encourage your team to pop back into the main room after their game to hang out! If not all players are able to make it to this event, we can certainly send you any unused game links afterwards for those players to complete Taboo at their leisure!
We do not offer refunds for people that are unable to attend. If you want the host to play on a team, they can still be responsible for the timer, and everyone else has to be responsible for their own mistakes. Once Kelly is finished, she tells the next person what slide she left off at, and minimizes her window. The next person to go will open the presentation, find that slide number, and continue.
I didn't think this would work well but to my surprise, everything went so smoothly, and we were able to get through all the cards! You can find over cards along with instructions and a template below. We are all trying our best to not get down during these unprecedented times of social distancing. This is a fun way to connect with friends. If you have any other resources, email us to see if we can add it to our list. Play Taboo Welcome! Happy playing!
